DOC: “This is the shortest route to the top of Mount Pureora. It’s a well maintained track with bridges across all waterways and a boardwalk towards the summit. On a clear day, enjoy views across Lake Taupo, the Mamaku Ranges, Mount Taranaki and Mount Ruapehu from the summit of Mount Pureora.”

Mount Pureora, located near Taupō in New Zealand’s North Island, is a prominent peak within the Pureora Forest Park. At 1,165 meters above sea level, it offers stunning views over the surrounding landscape on clear days, including Lake Taupō, Tongariro National Park, and beyond.

The area is known for its lush native bush, home to ancient podocarp trees like rimu, totara, and kahikatea, as well as diverse birdlife, including native species such as the tūī and kererū. The park also holds cultural significance, with historical connections to local Māori.

Mount Pureora Track is a popular trail that leads to the summit, it features a steep ascent but is relatively short. The track passes through dense native forest before breaking out onto the summit ridge, offering panoramic views.

Timber Trail is a longer, multi-day trail (85 km) known for its history as a logging area. It takes hikers and cyclists through regenerating forest, over suspension bridges, and past remnants of the timber industry. The Pureora Forest Park also offers opportunities for camping and exploring other natural wonders, such as volcanic landforms and bird sanctuaries.

Caution: The unmaintained old track down to Timber Trail from Summit is wild, overgrown. Experienced trampers only!
