Trails: Arataki carpark and suspension bridge – Arataki Track along the Arataki stream – YMCA Campsite – Mt Titiraupenga Track east to Lookout point – continue down west to Centre of The North Island Cairn – take the short track out to 4WD road…
“Starting at the Arataki Bridge, this adventure takes you through an impressive journey in the lush heart of the North Island. The trail initially leads to the YMCA camp, winding through tranquil native bush filled with birdlife and natural serenity. Continuing onward, you ascend toward the lookout point just below the summit rock of Mount Titiraupenga, where you are rewarded with stunning views and the sense of reaching a significant height. It is important to note that the summit of Mount Titiraupenga is Māori land and a taonga (treasure) to local iwi. To honor cultural values, please respect this sacred site by not climbing the summit rock.
The walk then leads you down to the geographic Centre of the North Island, a remarkable waypoint offering a connection to the land’s geographic and cultural core. From there, a short path transitions into a 4WD loop, where the trail broadens into an easier pace, showcasing a mix of forested scenery and rolling tracks. Finally, you complete the loop, returning to the Arataki Bridge, marking the end of a well-rounded and fulfilling day outdoors. This loop offers a blend of scenic diversity, cultural significance, and moments of reflection—a perfect hike for nature enthusiasts seeking an authentic and respectful New Zealand experience!”
Caution: Mount Titiraupenga Track east from YMCA to the lookout point is no longer maintained by DOC. No orange marks until halfway and overgrown. Track was damaged by slides in the beginning. Experienced and expert trampers only!
